Recommended iPads for Scanning

Matterport recommends using iPads with robust performance capabilities for optimal scanning experiences. According to their guidelines, devices are categorized based on their suitability for scanning tasks:

Best Options

  • iPad Pro 11” (3rd generation or higher)
  • iPad Pro 12.9” (5th generation or higher)
  • iPad Pro 13” (5th generation or higher)
  • iPad Air (5th generation or higher)
  • iPad Mini (6th generation or higher)

These models offer the fastest scan alignment times in the field, thanks to their latest chipsets, ample RAM, and upgradeability to iPadOS 17 or higher.

 

Strong Options

  • iPad Pro 12.9” (3rd and 4th generations)
  • iPad Pro 11” (1st and 2nd generations)
  • iPad Air (4th generation)
  • iPad (9th generation or higher)

These devices provide a good combination of RAM and processing power, suitable for most scanning tasks.

 

Minimum Requirements

  • iPad Pro 12.9” (2nd generation)
    • iPad Pro 10.5”
    • iPad (7th and 8th generations)
    • iPad Mini (5th generation)
    • iPad Air (3rd generation)

Devices in this category have at least 3GB of RAM, which is the minimum recommended for scanning. However, scan times may be slower, and the maximum size of the scan job might be limited.

Not Recommended

  • iPad (6th generation)

With only 2GB of RAM and older chipsets, these devices may experience slower performance and risk crashes during larger scanning jobs.

 

Not Supported

  • iPad Pro 9.7”
  • iPad Pro 12.9” (1st generation)
  • iPad (5th generation or earlier)
  • iPad Air 2 and earlier
  • iPad Mini (4th generation or earlier)

These older devices lack the necessary hardware capabilities and are no longer supported by Matterport.

 

Additional Recommendations

  • Storage Space: Matterport advises purchasing a device with at least 128GB of total storage to accommodate multiple models and facilitate future edits.
  •  iPadOS Version: Ensure your device is updated to the latest version of iPadOS. Matterport follows a “current minus one” approach, supporting the latest and one prior major version.

  • Local Network Access: On iPadOS 15 or higher, make sure that Local Network is enabled in the iOS Settings for the Capture app to connect to external cameras.

For the best scanning experience, Matterport recommends using the most powerful iPad available to you, emphasizing devices with the latest chipsets, ample RAM, and sufficient storage.
